Keynote Speakers

Chris Gibson

FIRST.Org, Inc. Executive Director
Chris brings a wealth of relevant and up-to-date experience in setting up and managing CERTs at the very highest levels of the worldwide Information and Cyber Security community.
Chris spent over 12 years working in the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) whilst at Citigroup and, for 10 years, was part of the leadership of the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST); 2 as Chair. Within FIRST he implemented the Fellowship program. This was created to fund CERTs from UN-designated “Least Developed Nations” (LDCs) allowing them both to join FIRST and attend conferences and training.
Chris joined the UK’s Cabinet Office, in 2013, to build, launch and lead the UK’s first formally chartered national CERT – CERT-UK. When CERT-UK was subsumed, in 2016, into the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre he left and joined Close Brothers as Chief Information Security Officer in November 2016, moved to Orwell Group as CISO in Jul 2018 and joined FIRST as it’s Executive Director in May 2019.
Chris’ experience has allowed him to work with colleagues from both inside some of the world’s largest global financial institutions with the complexities that brings and also with colleagues from the incident response community, with members ranging from Microsoft and Oracle through to the national CERTs of Azerbaijan and Indonesia.

Kevin Curran is a Professor of Cyber Security, Executive Co-Director of the Legal Innovation Centre and group leader for the Cybersecurity & Web Technologies Research Group at Ulster University. He is also a senior member of the IEEE and is a regular technology contributor to TV, radio, trade and consumer IT magazines.

Stephen Cobb
Stephen Cobb is an award-winning technologist who has spent over four decades working and researching at the intersection of digital technology and human behavior. The author of multiple publications on cybersecurity and data privacy, he is a CISSP (1996), and holds a masters in security and risk management from the University of Leicester (2016).

Dave Jevans
Executive Vice President, Crypto Security, Compliance & Payments, Mastercard.

Dave was co-founder and CEO of Ciphertrace, a leading blockchain security and regulatory compliance firm founded in 2015, and acquired by Mastercard in 2021. He was formerly CEO of IronKey, Marble Security and Receipt.com, all of which were acquired. Dave’s experience includes mergers & acquisition transactions, venture capital fundraising and IPO.
Dave enjoys working with regulators, central banks and policy makers on a global level. His areas of focus are cryptocurrencies and digital assets, national and international payments systems, and cyber security.
Dave is Chairman of the Board of the Anti-Phishing Working Group, and often speaks at APWG eCrime conferences. He is on the Board of Directors of the Travel Rule Information Sharing Alliance (TRISA), a regulatory compliance working group for cryptocurrencies and digital assets. He holds 24 issued patents in computer security, applied cryptography and 3D graphics.

Bernhard Haslhofer is a faculty member and the leader of the CryptoFinance research group at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna. Currently, he is directing his efforts toward the field of cryptoasset analytics. He and his team use quantitative methods to investigate various research questions related to cryptoasset ecosystems, such as those surrounding Bitcoin and Ethereum. In addition, he is leading the development of the GraphSense Cryptoasset Analytics Platform and teaches a course on Cryptoasset Analytics at TU Vienna.

Hyemin Lim is working as a criminal intelligence officer at INTERPOL. With more than 10 years in police sector, she is now work in the Fraud and Payment Crime unit at INTERPOL Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Centre. She mainly works for operations to stop money-laundering in cyber-enabled financial crimes. To achieve the goal, I-GRIP(a rapid response protocol for anti-money laundering) has been developed by INTERPOL and used among member countries.
As a senior inspector in Korean National Police Agency, she has experience in planning cyber investigation in Seoul such as sharing the criminal intelligence about cyber phishing crime with credit card companies after reviewing legal issues with experts. She obtained hers bachelor in Public Administration and Criminal Justice at Korean National Police University (KNPU) and a Master in International Relations at Seoul National University (SNU).

Michael Dewar

Dr Michael Dewar is a Vice President of Data Science in the Crypto and Security Innovation team within Cyber & Intelligence Solutions at Mastercard. Dr Dewar has a PhD in complex systems from the University of Sheffield in the UK, held postdoctoral positions at Edinburgh and Columbia Universities, and has published widely in the fields of modelling and machine learning.

Before joining Mastercard, Dr Dewar has held data scientist positions at the social media company bit.ly, and in the R&D Lab at the New York Times. During his time at Mastercard, Dr Dewar’s and his team have been responsible for designing, building, and operating live financial crime products used by the top UK banks, including the Trace Money Mules, Consumer Fraud Risk and Corporate Fraud Risk products.

Dr Christina Thorpe holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science from University College Dublin, which she completed in 2005. She further pursued her academic journey and obtained a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the same institution in 2011. From 2011 to 2018, Christina worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Performance Engineering Lab in UCD.

Currently, Dr Thorpe serves as the Head of Cybersecurity at Technological University Dublin. In this role, she contributes to managing the operations and shaping the vision of the cybersecurity discipline within the university. Additionally, Dr. Thorpe is actively involved in leading and co-leading three research projects that primarily focus on online child safety and leverage the power of AI to address the associated challenges.

Adriana Freitas

Adriana is excited about joining APWG.eu as the Responsible for Research Projects, as it offers opportunities to work on challenging cybersecurity initiatives and collaborate with an international team.
Adriana is an experienced telecom expert who embarked on a journey into the world of cybersecurity with a determination to make a significant impact. With over 20 years of telecom industry experience, she has developed a deep passion for safeguarding digital landscapes. Adriana’s career began at 2 Satellite companies (Omnitracs and Globalstar) prior to join Telefonica, where she excelled in managerial roles for a decade, overseeing successful international projects in cities like Rio, Miami, NYC, SF, and her current base Barcelona. In addition to her professional experience, Adriana has made significant contributions to the Barcelona community. She actively participated in events such as databeersBCN, a Data Science Community-driven event, and FlossBcn, a Barcelona City initiative. Additionally, she actively contributes to the Barcelona entrepreneurial community as a mentor, board advisor, and investor. Adriana is also the founder of Muster Ventures helping B2B startups on its starts. Recognizing the urgent need for stronger digital defenses, in 2019 Adriana embraced the cybersecurity realm and collaborated with the renowned InLab-UPC Cybersecurity unit (esCERT.upc.edu). Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Manel Medina, she actively contributed to the unit’s initiatives and projects, worked on the application for 14 H2020 and other European projects. Adriana holds an M.S. degree in Data Science and Big Data, as well as specialization training from ESADE and IE. She also possesses an MBA from IEDE/Universidad Europea Madrid, an M.S. in Marketing from UFGV Sao Paulo, and a Master of Engineering degree from UNB, Brasilia.

Marc is a well-known intelligence expert who also has a history in reverse engineering, giving him a unique set of skills. Because of his extensive training and expertise in the industry, he has been able to fascinate audiences at both national and international conferences. In his work with CERT/CSIRT teams at top financial institutions, where he has held the respected post of Head of Research, Marc’s education in Intelligence has shown to be extremely helpful and has proven to be essential. He is highly sought after for his knowledge, and he is the driving force behind many research initiatives that are examining the depths of fraud, cybercrime, and targeted attacks. Marc is not only successful in his professional endeavors, but he is also a devoted educator. He currently serves as the coordinator for the Master in Computer Security program offered at La Salle Barcelona. Marc continues to significantly impact the future of the intelligence and security industries thanks to his extraordinary abilities and innovative approach.

Cormac O'Reilly

Cormac leads the Incident Response team within the National Cyber Security Centre, based here in Dublin. Cormac has spent the last 6 years working within the Computer Security Incident Response team (CSIRT-IE), mainly on Incident response, Digital forensics, malware analysis and cyber threat intelligence.
The CSIRT-IE team was established in 2011, and is an accredited CSIRT with Trusted Introducer and FIRST. They are also an Advanced CERT with ENISA and active members of various CSIRT communities.

Jose M. Legido is a Telecommunication Engineer and Certified Information Security Manager by ISACA, with 30 years’ experience in the fields of aerospace engineering and ICT. Currently he is International Markets Director within GMV Secure eSolutions where, among other activities, he leads the development of the cybersecurity portfolio of GMV in the aerospace domain.

Stewart Garrick

Stewart Garrick (Law Enforcement Liaison and Operations Manager, male) has worked for the Shadowserver Foundation for over 7 years. Previously he served 30 years in UK Law Enforcement (culminating as a Senior Investigating Officer in the National Crime Agency). As a career detective he worked primarily on major crime units engaged on both proactive and reactive investigations, including many high profile cybercrime cases as the senior investigator. His role now is supporting Law Enforcement investigations for Shadowserver. He is currently actively engaged in multiple ongoing international cases. He understands the operational challenges and differing evidentiary restrictions and capabilities across the EU and worldwide. His focus is always to help Law Enforcement achieve their Intelligence and evidential needs in ways they can actually use.
Qualifications: MSc in Countering Organised Crime and Terrorism at UCL and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

Siôn joined ICANN’s SSR team in 2020 where he works on various aspects of DNS abuse including looking at the use of global events like COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine. He is also working on blocklist data and how accounting for suspended/non-existent/parked domains can be important for understanding potential impacts.

Jordi Guijarro is working as the Cybersecurity Innovation Director at i2CAT. With more than 20 years in ICT sector, he is an expert in cloud oriented and cybersecurity services. In the cybersecurity arena he has experience in managing CERT/CSIRT teams employing proactive, reactive and value-added security services such as perimeter protection, infrastructure hardening, intrusion/anomaly detection, incident handling, etc.
He also combines his work at i2CAT with the participation in European and national projects, and collaborates in high education programs with some universities (UPC, UOC, VIU). He obtained his bachelor in Computing Engineering at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) and a Master in ICT Management at Universitat Ramon Llull.

(Hons) in Applied Science (Computer Science and Software Engineering) and received a Master Degree in Computer Science (Data Science) from Technological University Dublin in 2021. John has worked as an IT professional since 1997 and is currently the Director of the Professional Services team (EMEA) in Daon where we work with the fintech market to bring biometric security to financial institutions as well as working on large scale biometric projects. His current research is part of a PhD programme that John is undertaking in a part-time capacity.”

Vuong M. Ngo

Vuong M. Ngo received the B.E, M.E and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from HCMC University of Technology in 2004, 2007 and 2013 respectively. In addition, he completed the postdoctoral program in information retrieval at the University of Bozen/Bolzano from 2014 to 2015. Currently, since May 2022, he has been a senior researcher in Data Science at the School of Computer Science, Technological University Dublin. Previously, Dr. Vuong held various positions, including CIO, Vice-Dean and Head of Department in information technology at Vietnam Universities from 2007 to 2017. From 2017 to 2020, he worked as a researcher in Data Science at UCD, and from 2020 to 2022, he held a position as a researcher in Information Retrieval at TCD. His research interests include data warehouse, information retrieval, sentiment analysis, data mining and machine learning.


Iggy Azad

Iggy Azad is a Director at Coinbase focused on investigations and intelligence. He leads a team of investigators targeting illicit crypto activity from fraud to terrorist financing. Prior to joining Coinbase he served as a Detective Sergeant within the Met. Police Cyber Crime Unit, he has experience of investigating dark web threat actors, phishing, malware, insider threat, fraud and money laundering. He first began investigating criminal use of crypto currency in 2014. He has presented at national and international conferences on his experiences as a cryptocurrency investigator.

Hauke Jan Lübbers

Hauke is the Director of Software Development at CSIS Security Group in Copenhagen, Denmark. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science and has been working in the information security industry since 2015.

At CSIS, he and his team are building systems that help security analysts, researchers, and customers to produce, consume and act on all types of Cyber Threat Intelligence. Over the years he has worked on DNS security software, Threat Intelligence Portals, Business Email Compromise detection, and Anti-Phishing solutions.

In his spare time, he volunteers as a lifeboat helm, and enjoys kayaking.

Michael O’Callaghan

Michael O’Callaghan is a senior cybersecurity and cybercrime professional with 17 years experience across the Irish Defence Forces and the UCD Centre for Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Investigation (CCI). His primary degree is in Electronic Engineering and Military Communication and he holds a first class honours Masters in Forensic Computing and Cybercrime Investigation from UCD. He is currently completing a second Masters in Cybersecurity in UCD. Michael has worked with local and international police forces, Europol and the European Cybercrime, Training and Education Group (ECTEG) to provide advisory and training services, project management and cybersecurity application development. He has been involved in several EU projects including CYCLOPES and FREETOOL, which are dedicated to solving cybercrime investigation challenges for law enforcement. In his spare time he enjoys reading, going to the gym and playing tennis.

Marc currently leads the Cybercrime Security Research function at eBay, having spent the past 10 years across Threat & Vulnerability for a pan-European Stock Exchange, consulting in Threat Intelligence within Financial Services, and supporting clients as a Principal Analyst for a cyber security vendor.
An undergraduate (BSc Business Information Technology) and post-graduate (MSc Business Management / Post-grad Diploma, Management Practice) of Queen’s University Belfast and University College Dublin. Marc also is part of the organising committee for BSides Belfast and is an active CISSP.

He has a genuine passion for operating system security, malware analysis, and remaining proactive against emerging threats.

Shaun Durkan

Shaun joined An Garda Síochána in 2001 and served in a variety of roles in Galway before coming to Dublin and joining the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau. He has twenty years’ policing experience in a variety of investigative and intelligence units.  He is currently a Detective Sergeant in the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau. He holds a MSc in Management from UCD Smurfit Business School and is currently completing a MSc in Cybersecurity Management from MTU.
